Volunteer
Thank you for your interest in being a volunteer in BSD!
With about 38,000 students at 54 schools, there are many ways volunteers — whether parents/guardians, family members, neighbors or community members — can contribute: tutor or mentor students, assist in the library or cafeteria, help with school beautification projects, teach art literacy, judge science fairs and more. Sharing your time and talents enriches the educational experience for our students, provides additional support to teachers and staff, and promotes positive school-community partnerships. It also provides volunteers with rich, meaningful experiences.
At the district level, we're always looking for volunteers to serve in our Clothes for Kids program, which provides free clothing and shoes to those students in need.
Volunteer Application Process
Mandatory Volunteer Training
For the safety of our students, all volunteer applicants are required to review the mandatory volunteer training information before completing the volunteer application.
Volunteer Application & Criminal Records Check
Again, to safeguard the safety and well-being our students and staff, each prospective volunteer must complete an application through our districtwide volunteer management system called Raptor and then submit to an Oregon criminal records check. You'll receive a confirmation email as soon as the application has been approved. This process can take up to 10 business days to complete; we're unable to accept special requests to expedite the process, regardless of upcoming volunteer opportunities or events. Once approved, you can create a user profile in Raptor which will allow you to view and sign up for volunteer opportunities at the school or district site(s) that you requested. You'll also be able to communicate directly with school and district volunteer coordinators.
Criminal Records Check Information
Beaverton School District will conduct a criminal background check on all volunteer applicants, and we reserve the right to deny applicants with a criminal history and registered sex offenders.
If approved
If you clear the criminal background check, you'll receive an approval email with further instructions for setting up your volunteer profile in Raptor. This approval is good for two years.
If denied
If you're denied, you'll receive email notification. If you have questions about your denial, you may contact the Public Safety Department at 503-356-4444.
To enter a BSD school beyond the main office while school is in session:
1. Present a government-issued identification (ID) with photo and birth date. Examples include:
- Driver’s license
- State ID card
- Passport
- Consular ID card
2. The school staff will scan your ID and print an official name badge.
Volunteer Opportunities
From the classroom to the library to the cafeteria, volunteers are a vital part of every school. If you're interested in volunteering at a particular school, please contact that school's main office directly or contact the school's parent organization, typically referred to as a PTO or PTC.
We also have several districtwide programs that rely on volunteers to operate. Your help is greatly appreciated! Learn more below.
Community Volunteers
If you're a community member (not a parent or a student with access to ParentSquare), please visit our Join Community Groups webpage to sign up to receive information about volunteer opportunities.
Before volunteering, review the BSD Volunteer Handbook.
To learn more about PTOs and PTCs, visit the Parent Organization webpage.
